At Dewhurst Torevell we have a history of ‘supporting excellence’ through our links with Chetham’s School of Music, The Royal Exchange Theatre and the Manchester Art Gallery. Over the last three years, we have also been ‘supporting excellence’ in the sporting world through our sponsorship of Bethany Widdup.
Bethany began skiing at the age of 5 at Ski Rossendale, although she didn’t start racing until the age of 12. Since starting to race, Bethany has made rapid progress and by 2012 had earned Team England selection and become British Indoor Champion. After finishing her A Levels in 2013, Bethany had her first full time season on the continent in 2013/14 and has been following a full time skiing program since then.
When Bethany first came to see us, we were impressed by the way she presented herself and by her determination and desire to excel at her chosen sport. At the age of 20, Bethany is one of Britain’s most promising winter sports talents, gaining consistently high finishes in the slalom and giant slalom disciplines both in British and continental events, as well as earning a place on the British under-21 national team. Bethany’s immediate goals are to earn selection for the 2016 World Junior Championships, to start racing at Europa Cup level and to reduce her world ranking. Her longer term aim is to ski for England in the next Winter Olympics in South Korea in 2018.
You won’t be surprised to learn that this isn’t without its challenges both on and off the snow. Bethany spends most of her year in Austria following a demanding training schedule containing a tough regime of practice on the slopes and intensive gym sessions designed to build on her existing talents. Once the racing season starts then in addition to the training there are races spread across Europe demanding commitment of the highest level.
Like many sports, it is not cheap to train and compete in international circles and although Bethany is on the British team she still has to support herself financially. We are proud to count ourselves among her sponsors and with the 2015-16 ski season about to begin, we wish Bethany all the very best for the new season and will provide written updates on here to keep you informed of her progress.
