The 16th annual Dewhurst Torevell competition took place at Chetham’s School of Music on Thursday 9th May where 40 guests judged performances from 4 student ensembles, selected by Stephen Threlfall, Director of Music at Chetham’s.
The performances were typically varied and included jazz, piano and strings. After much deliberation our guests decided that the Callum Smart string quartet would receive this year’s award; the £1,000 prize money has been used to purchase additional sheet music for the school.
The Dewhurst Torevell annual Chetham’s Music award has been in existence since 1997. Held in Chetham’s Baronial Hall, the competition requires performers to present their chosen pieces of music to the audience who then vote for the winning act.
